Completing my degree during a global pandemic

Every student across the world will remember 2020.

GCSEs and Alevels cancelled, universities forced to cancel lectures and turn into Zoom or Microsoft Teams to deliver content.

Final year students like myself were in for a treat. The one moment we were waiting on for the last three years was put on hold indefinitely. While some universities have flat out cancelled their July graduation, my university has postponed it.

Even before I came to Kingston in September 2017 I visualised getting ready for graduation, having my family see me walk across the stage and celebrating with my friends. Fast forward to 17 March 2020 when KU announced that face to face teaching would stop. I was in the midst of working on my Law Reform Project which was a 10,000 word report .

I chose Immigration Law, looking at the provisions for international students. This topic was personal since I am an international student and directly affected by these provisions. My supervisor, Dr Phil Harris was extraordinary and I am so thankful to him, my LRP lecturer, my personal tutor and the international students who aided in my empirical research. So happy to say that I managed to achieve a first in my report which made me ecstatic after all of the long hours I put into it.

Since 17 March when everything stopped, I have submitted four assignments: LRP, Dispute Resolution, Equity and Trusts and finally, yesterday I submitted the final assignment for my degree, Family and Child Law.

It has been an interesting experience trying to find focus amidst the chaos but it had to be done. We have pushed through the days of feeling unmotivated and just wanting to stay in bed all day to deiver work.

I saw a meme sometime in April which basically said that university students are not just completing our degree from home. We're completing it during a global pandemic.

With all what's going on, every university student should be proud beyond measure that they managed to complete assignments and online exams. This will be a story we tell our children and grandchildren, ladies and gents:

the one where we had to complete university during a pandemic.

So to the class of 2020: even though the lack of thrill at the end of your last lecture, feelings while waiting for your last set of results to be released and the enjoyment of graduation may have been taken from you (or 'postponed'), remember that your achievement is the same! YOU DID THAT!
