I’m Cheyenne Polius, a 22-year-old who’s studying an Astrophysics degree but I’m not at university right now because I’m doing a work placement in the UK Civil Service. So, I’m living in London and working in Westminster which means I have to deal with the busy underground 5 days a week. However, travelling to and from work gives me time to read lots of amazing books and that makes me happy. I love reading but at university, all I ever had time to read were textbooks. Now I have a not-so-secret love affair with self-help books. I hope I can give you a taster of why I love them so much in my post.
When I’m not reading or working, I’m probably president-ing. Oh yeah, I’m the President of the St Lucia National Astronomy Association (LUNAA). The LUNAA team is just out here sharing our love for space with the super big goal of raising awareness of the benefits of Space Technology to the Caribbean region. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter: @lunaa758 or Facebook: @slu.astronomy
What’s your frequency?
If you told me that 2018 was the year I would be the President of the first St Lucia National Astronomy Association, I would never believe you. And to think it happened because of one tiny leap of faith in a Facebook message.

Writing this blog could not have been timed better because I just had the worst week. Nothing was working out how I wanted it to and I got swallowed by a cloud of self-pity. But I had been in worse situations and I didn’t let self-pity win. So, what was the difference between the Cheyenne then and the Cheyenne now? She chose to keep going no matter what obstacles were in her way. She made a conscious choice to see EVERY situation in a positive light and replace bad thoughts with good ones. (There’s a great post about this on The Unicorn Project's website too!)
My favourite self-help book (You are a Badass by Jen Sincero) describes being in a positive headspace as vibrating at a “high frequency”. She explains that everything in the universe vibrates at a certain frequency and high frequencies attract high frequencies just as low attracts low. The things you dream of having: wealth, fame, your soulmate, a cute puppy, these are all good things and thus vibrate at high frequencies. If you go about your life, annoyed, angry or full of self-pity then you’re vibrating at a low frequency and you’re preventing these things from being attracted to you. What’s your frequency?
Jen explains it better but here’s how I think of it. When I’m vibrating at a high frequency, it means I’m being optimistic and making sure that I’m thinking of positive things as much as possible. I’m believing that I have the power to achieve anything I put my mind to. So, I attract things at high frequencies, which includes people and opportunities. This led me to one of my greatest achievements to date: St Lucia National Astronomy Association (LUNAA). This association was launched November 2018 after meeting some amazing people. I give my high frequency full credit for how I met those people because there was no way I could have seen this coming.
In 2017, I got appointed as the National Point of Contact for St Lucia in the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) (fancy way of saying that I was volunteering to raise awareness of how Space Exploration can benefit St Lucia). Fast forward to 2018 and I was giving up. “St Lucia doesn’t care about Space and they never will” was my favourite low-frequency thought because I could blame something else.
Then I started reading You are a Badass and thought it was a book full of nonsense at first. Jen was telling me to take one step toward manifesting my dreams and I was like, “Yeah whatever Jen, I’ve been trying for over a year.” I closed the book and opened Facebook instead. I’d been following the St Lucia Science and Technology (S&T) page for a while and it crossed my mind to message them before but I didn’t think they’d be interested in Space-related stuff. Then I remembered what I read: “..one step..”. So, messaged the S&T page and explained what I was trying to do. While I was typing I got filled with so much joy as I started to think about my vision for St Lucia in the Space Sector (high-frequency thoughts).
From that one message I:
· met St Lucia’s S&T Officer who helped me set up a talk I gave on behalf of SGAC. From that audience, I met 3 people who are now part of the LUNAA executive committee
· created a video for the S&T page that led me to the other 5 members of LUNAA’s executive
· LAUNCHED ST. LUCIA’S FIRST NATIONAL ASTRONOMY ASSOCIATION!
There are countless other times that I’ve focused on keeping my frequency high and other great things have come my way. If you think that it was all a coincidence or I’m “just lucky” I dare you to give it a try. So...
