It's really about the bigger picture

The best month of the year is here! I mean, it’s almost over, but I digress. Apart from being my birth month, July is the ideal time for beach days, barbeques and simply enjoying summer. But I must say, one of the things I love most about July is Carnival. Anyone who knows me knows that I am definitely a Carnival baby! Being from Saint Lucia and a lover of Soca music, that’s kind of inevitable, to be honest. From the swarm of concerts and parties, to the ultimate Parade of the Bands, the Saint Lucian air is filled with pure vybes. For those of you who may not be familiar to the carnival scene, let me paint you guys a picture of what the parade is actually like. Imagine dressing up in colourful, vibrant costumes, listening to your favourite type of music, dancing in the streets and simply enjoying life with your famalay (friends). Being carefree, letting go of all the stresses in your life-a true remedy. Amazing right?!

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend Saint Lucia Carnival 2019. I am currently completing an internship in Canada and simply was not able to make the trip back home. Surprisingly enough, it has been worth it. This internship has been such a blessing as it gave me insight into a totally different career path.

I don’t mean to be dramatic, but I can definitely say it has been a huge game changer.

Being a Chemical Engineering major, I focused mainly on career choices pertaining to Research and Development or the Oil and Gas Industry. But working in manufacturing showed me another side to Chemical Engineering and made me feel like I definitely made the right choice. That being said, if I chose to go home for Carnival, a festival that I LOVE, I would have never gotten this opportunity. I had to sacrifice a good time for something more worthwhile. That being said, I still felt like I was missing out when I saw my friends having the time of their lives on social media. There was one day, in particular, where I posted a picture of myself (a miserable one at that) with the caption “why did I choose this summer to be responsible?” A few of my friends came to the rescue and reminded me of the rationale behind my choice- “It will be worth it Tarmz, don’t worry about it”. I honestly had to remind myself why I indeed chose to be responsible this summer.

So here’s my reminder to you!

For all of you who may not be having a lit summer because you have to work or take summer classes, FUTURE YOU WILL THANK YOU! It’s a necessary sacrifice.

I believe my 20s are supposed to be my struggle years-the decade I work the hardest towards future me. Although it won’t be easy, I’m still going to enjoy it, because all work and no play makes Tarmy a very dull girl, and nobody wants that. But I am definitely going to do everything I can to attain the goals I set out for myself. The next time you miss out on going to a concert or going to your favourite festival for a greater cause, remember why you’re doing it- FUTURE YOU WILL THANK YOU!

Told you my other best friend would be making an appearance! How amazing is it to have such phenomenal and inspiring woman in my circle? Tarmy, Destinie (last month’s guest blogger) and I have been best friends for almost a decade now and we truly add so much value to each other’s lives! It’s crazy that when I see people speak about not being able to trust friends etc, I don’t know how to respond, because I can’t relate!

Today is Tarmy’s birthdayyyyy! Whoop whoop! And Though I’m putting this up at 3:35am in the UK, it’s still her birthday in Canada. Yay time zones! Okay, enough waffling...

Tarmy is a 4th year Chemical Engineering student at Dalhousie University in Canada. As part of her degree, she is currently working as a Process Engineering Intern for the summer at a wallboard manufacturing plant. Along with pursing her studies, she also finds time to follow her passion- aiding students in pursuit of their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)-related goals. She does this by tutoring high school students through Imhotep’s Legacy Academy, an academy that seeks to promote careers in STEM for Black students in Nova Scotia. She is also an online tutor for The Academic Consulting Agency, a newfound company whose goal is to aid and guide youth in furthering their education in a financially conscious manner.
